There is a huge literature on colour preference in biting flies, mostly
centred around the agricultural pests. For many species, black is the
number one preference, followed by other dark colours. When I teach field
biology I warn the students to choose lighter coloured clothing...but
fashion takes precedence, and many come in wearing the black leggings
anyway.
