On Monday, Aug. 11 we visited Grand Pre and Evangeline Beach with
friends to see the shorebirds. We walked West from Evangeline along the
beach to see the Bank Swallows, and were lucky to find one tunnel in the
cliff still occupied. We saw two juveniles, which seemed to be close to
fledging, being fed by adults. There were many tunnels which looked like
they had been occupied this year, but were now deserted. Further along
the shore there were some more tunnels, a few of which looked like they
had been recently used, but most of which were older. We had to walk
fast to beat the tide back to the stairs at Evangeline! After that we
followed the huge flocks of Peeps by car back and forth from the
cottages to East Point, and then to Horton's Landing and back to
Evangeline. Don revised his estimate of numbers of Peeps from an
initial 5000 to 8000 after looking at his photos at home. Still seems
like an under-estimate to me!
