Hi Mary,
    From your description it seems possible that someone tried to establish 
a cranberry bog here which as I recall needs level, preferably sandy or 
peaty soil, and some way to flood or drain the cropped area. Have you talked 
to any of the nearby older residents ? Does the dike prevent drainage from 
the wetland or is it a spoil bank of material removed from the canals ?
