I know that purple finch is a potential competitor for sugar-water at =
hummer feeders, but probably not so at flowers, esp. flowers past their =
prime. Cheers from Jim in Wolfville

For the past number of days, what appears to be an adult female =
Ruby-throat has been coming to our gardens, attempting to feed on the =
remaining plants (most well past of yielding any nectar). It has shown =
no interest in our two feeders. This morning it was there again but a =
Purple Finch perched near where it was feeding. The hummer immediately =
started dive displays & continued them until the finch, probably a bit =
bemused by the antics, flew off to a corner of the garden. The hummer =
then stopped the displays & flew off.

Never read where Ruby-throats used the dive displays in this way & if it =
is a female, even more unusual. If it returns, I will check it out more =
closely.
