Hi Hans

Did you manage to capture any of this in photos?

Andrew

Subject: [NatureNS] Bobcat Behaviour

Yesterday evening I stopped on Sandy Cove Road just one utility pole distant from the intersection with Ketch Harbour Road. A pair of Grey Jays on the east side of the road attracted my attention so I got out of my car to attempt some photos. I heard what I thought was an odd sounding "screech", much like a Hermit Thrush, coming from the west side of the road. Then suddenly a bobcat kitten popped out of the east side bushes from the direction of the Grey Jays, and stopped not three metres from me. The kitten was no larger than a house cat, perhaps four kilograms, and unbelievably cute with an appearance that was identical to an adult, complete with the pointy ears, puffy cheeks and short raised tail. The kitten had not seen me yet but when I lifted my camera, for a "life shot", it was enough movement to attract its attention and it disappeared into the woods on the west side of the road. The"screeching continued" so I concluded that perhaps it was an adult bobcat calling its kittens or a Hermit Thrush with a bad head cold.

I continued on down the road and met up with Richard Hatch and relayed the story to him. After a brief look at the dogs running around Sandy Cove's beach I gave up on seeing any shore birds. Off on a distant rock a large shore bird sat, possibly the American Golden Plover that has frequented the beach in the last few days.

As I returned back towards Ketch Harbour Road I spotted Richard Hatch parked. I double parked beside him and we had a fifteen minute discussion about the bobcat kitten while listening to the "screeching" which continued on the west side of the road. Then another bobcat kitten appeared on the road and crossed over from the east side to the west side. Then the "screeching" stopped. We surmised that the mother bobcat had finally collected its whole brood.

It was a life experience for both Richard and I.

Hans
