The meeting is open to the public. The main presentation will be: Leatherback Turtles: Treks of the Titans, by Kathleen Martin/Mike James Kathleen (or Mike) will provide an update on their extensive research on le= atherback turtle migration and recent conservation efforts of the Canadian = Sea Turtle Network. Their work was in part spawned by a mentor, and long-ti= me BNS member, Dr. Sherman Bleakney, who suggested that leatherbacks might = be regular visitors to Canada =96 in fact Nova Scotia=92s waters prove to b= e vitally important! Kathleen is the Executive Director of the Canadian Sea Turtle Network, a no= n-profit organization involving scientists, commercial fishermen, and coast= al community members that works to conserve endangered sea turtles in Canad= ian waters and worldwide. The group won the Gold Canadian Environment Award= for Conservation in 2007. Kathleen is adjunct professor in Dalhousie Unive= rsity=92s School for Resource and Environmental Studies. She is interested = in sea turtles and how communication affects conservation. She holds degree= s in English literature from the University of Toronto (Hon. B.A.) and Quee= n=92s University (M.A.). She has also published seven nature books for chil= dren.
