I went warblerless today=2C if that is a word. Anyhow=2C I made a run to V=
olgler's Cove=2C Cherry Hill Beach and Broad Cove. I was only able to come=
up with 32 species=2C most of which were seen at Cherry Hill Beach. It wa=
s a pleasant surprise to run into Fred Dobson and his wife. Many of you wi=
ll know Fred from his previously living in Nova Scotia. They are now in Va=
ncouver. I did not see much more than Fred and his wife had at Cherry Hill=
. I was surprised to find fewer shorebirds and fewer species than I had se=
en at Conrad's Island last weekend. Usually Cherry Hill is better for both=
species and numbers. A merlin partrolling probably did not help maters an=
d made accurate counting of the shorebirds present somewhat of a challenge.=
Fred had mentioned the merlin to me as well as most other shorebird speci=
es that I did see.

Semi-palmated plover 145
Sanderling 33
Least Sandpiper 11
Greater Yellowlegs 2
Rudyturnstone 9
Bairds Sandpiper 2
White-rumped Sandpiper 2
Black-bellied Plover 13
Whimbrel 10
Semi-palmated Sandpiper 4

At Broad Cove Beach

Semi-palmated Plover 40
Least Sandpiper 4
Solitary Sandpiper 2
Short-billed Dowitcher 1 (I really tried to make it into a long-billed=2C b=
ut it just did not work out as such. There were some features that would h=
ave been close to long-billed=2C but I finally ruled long-billed out.) I fi=
nd different books very confusing as to field marks between these two speci=
es. I finally looked at photos online and it was definitely short-billed o=
n the basis of the wing pattern and strong white showing in the feathers. =
The photos for the long-billed that I looked at did not show a strong black=
and white contrast on the back and side. What they say about the feathers=
along the side in the books does not seem to me to be cut and dry for the =
id. At least on the basis of the photos that I looked at online. The wint=
er plumage for these two species I admit is a challenge for me. =20
