> SEPT. 16, 2014 - MINER=92S MARSH, Kentville =97 one muskrat swimming =
down the river (a stroller on the bridge saw one recently carrying an =
apple in its mouth in the river) =97 I wonder why I have seen almost no =
muskrats this summer in the marsh =97 beggar-ticks (probably Bidens =
frondosa)(we have at least two common species locally) common and in =
bloom along the trail (this plant produces pesky seeds with two prongs =
that are great at catching in human clothing as we walk in marshy or =
waste areas in autumn) =97 at least 3 pied-billed grebes seen (prob. all =
full-grown youngsters from this year=92s breeding season (James =
Churchill and others had evidence of three consecutive broods being =
produced, by at least two nesting pairs, this year =97 I heard and saw =
at least 4 red-winged blackbirds roosting? in the cattails in early =
afternoon =97 finally, I counted at least 9 or 10 brand-new nest-boxes =
for tree swallows (or other species) that were just placed very =
professionally there along the edge of the easternmost pond this past =
Saturday, Sept. 13, by the Young Naturalists Club with able assistance =
from George Forsyth and Ed Sulis of the Blomidon Naturalists Society.
