Dear All, Sept 21, 2014
This was about 20' from the nest on the house and size looks right; =
trying to keep warm on a wheelbarrow. I could not get a shot of the face =
but the abdomen and side of the head seems to agree with bald-faced =
hornet aka white-faced wasp.=20

Dave, your nice photo is of a nest of either a bald-faced hornet or one =
of the yellow-jackets =97 both are in the same group of social wasps =
that are quite different from paper wasps, another very common social =
species. Since you said these were black and large, I will bet on the =
bald-faced hornet. They and yellow-jackets both are seekers of =
sweetness and can be pests at hummer feeders. Cheers from Jim in =
Wolfville.

  Hi Richard,
Locating the wasp nest (follow that wasp) and moving one of your =
feeders near their nest might work.
Today a neighbor pointed out that we have a large nest on our =
house under an overhang; about 9" diam & 10" tall; wasps are black, =
large & busy.
