There are 3 previous records for the island beginning in 1964, the last in =
2003. So it is pretty close to mega-rare.

Subject: [NS-RBA] Swainson's Hawk on Brier Island Sept. 25
On the afternoon of September 25th I was walking the coastal path going S f=
rom West Light. I saw a Buteo that I certainly could not identify but I man=
aged to get distant documentation photos when it perched in a tree. By the =
next day Ian McLaren had replied "Wow, Rick: The only buteo I know with a =
face pattern like that is light-phase juv Swainson's." However, we both wan=
ted to be certain of the ID before going public as this group is highly var=
iable. With Ian's help on the out of province contacts, we now have agreeme=
nt on the ID from Paul Buckley & Brian Sullivan (eBird Project Leader) as w=
ell as from Eric Mills and Richard Stern. We consider the ID certain. In hi=
s recent book Ian reports 11 records for NS through 2010. My two document! =

A much better "juvenile pale or intermediate morph" photo (clearly darker, =
thus intermediate) can be seen at plate 25 in Ian's book.
