Hi Nick & All, Dec 24, 2014
The term 'invasive' is I think widely used to the detriment of =
objective biology. It is an example of punishment first, trial later. =
Both these species were introduced but I fail to see how either can be =
justifiably considered invasive. If species were judged, in an objective =
way, on the basis of properties as opposed to widely held prejudices =
then the outcome would be more favourable all round. We would be less =
inclined to injure enemies which, on closer examination, might turn out =
to be friends.
The House Sparrow moved around on the coat tails of humans until =
house design, fewer sheds and changes in farming led to their decline. =
In that context which is the invasive species ? On the farm and perhaps =
in urban areas they helped to keep some insects in check so I suspect =
their decline is our loss. =20
Rosa rugosa, in Roland's 1944 Flora of NS is noted as "Commonly =
cultivated: becoming established as an escape about Yarmouth".In the =
most recent flora (1998) it has clearly spread but is still limited to =
sea-shore thickets and roadsides. For a plant which is commonly =
cultivated, this kind of limited spreading in 54 years to harsh habitats =
does not suggest that it is about to take over.
The last time I was in Yarmouth (~2005 ?) I was impressed by the =
ability of this plant to hold soil against the action of sea wind (& =
presumably salt), runoff water and gravity. In a period of rising oceans =
and increasing frequency of storm surges this plant is I think of =
considerable value. And I hope some misguided "Biologists" will not be =
able to launch a program to cleanse this scourage from to coastline.=20
