Hi Darrell, Jan 4, 2015
That factoid sounds like a mythoid to me. If someone were foolish =
enough to leave all lights on day and night, that might be possible. Or =
alternatively had neither electric range, nor toaster ovens, toaster, =
clothes washer, clothes drier or any other electrical appliances.
Light bulbs, when turned off, use no power so much depends on style =
of useage.
And that factoid is loosely worded. Is that 20% of power used in =
households or 20% of power used in all settings as the wording implies ?
=20
Drawing on memory, I understand that Al Gore, of inconvenient truth =
fame, uses 26 times as much power in his house as does the average =
American family and that he receives $1.00 for every compact fluorescent =
bulb sold.=20
The recently constructed White Point Lodge had a light fixture get =
hot enough to smoke and trigger (an evacuation ?) and a call to the fire =
department. I would expect that was a new improved light source; =
improved in the sense that few companies have the right to make them.
I checked my estimate of light usage and found an error. There has =
been much other traffic recently so it got set aside. Our estimated =
power usage for light was 468 kW h/yr; 5.6 % of power used in the =
average household in 2007 and ~10% of our average power usage over 30 =
years (4847.5 kW h/yr).
Recent average figures released by NS Power for households are =
misleading because cottages are included.

Concerning lights and power usage...
On the Smithsonian Channel tonight there was a show called Quest. The =
topic was on future power, smart power etc.
One factoid was that in the USA, 20% of power usage is from household =
lights
Home Hardware has an LED on for $7 this week, see flyer. I plan on =
doing my part.
