These are interesting observations. I can see how fertilizing a harbour =
=0A=
with sewage will increase its primary production and shift if from =0A=
attached plants (kelp=2C eelgrass=2C etc.) to phytoplankton. But I doubt =
that the =0A=
unmentionables we flush down our toilets are directly available =0A=
to seabirds and seals as food. The stuff forms local sewage upwellings =
=0A=
(sewage is warm)=2C is dispersed by tidal currents=2C and broken down by=
=0A=
decomposers=2C which eventually liberate the phosphates and nitrates... =

Hello all=2C=20
I can't speak to Halifax Harbour but for =0A=
comparison...=20
The Sydney side of Sydney harbour was fitted with =0A=
wastewater infrastructure within the last ten years. Since the diversio=
n of =0A=
wastewater the clusters of diving ducks and seals=2C have either left o=
r are =0A=
very obviously not as plentiful as they used to be. On the west side of=
the =0A=
harbour where infrastructure is yet to come (but on the way!) ducks sti=
ll =0A=
frequent the outfalls.=20
My two cents on why=2C are these: =0A=
=20
Wastewater does cause eutrophication=2C fertilizing plants and algae =0A=
(an onwards up the web). Food availability would definatley be differen=
t at =0A=
outfalls than where there are none.=20
Often times=2C here=2C the warmer =0A=
water at outfalls causes openings in the ice. In some areas these are t=
he =0A=
only access points to the water.=20

Joanne=2C =0A=
an excellent question. A broader one is what is it that =0A=
attracts birds to the outfalls? The warm temperature of the discharge? =
it =0A=
seems that a lot of the herring and great black-backed gulls that used =
to =0A=
frequent the Point Pleasant Park outfalls were just bathing. Lots of =
=0A=
preening=2C wind fluttering=2C etc. is the attraction the fish that are=
=0A=
themselves attracted to this warm water? The sewage itself? =0A=

Just curious: Have there been any noticeable changes in =0A=
the numbers and species of waterfowl associated with Halifax Harbour =
sewer =0A=
outlets since the Harbour Solutions project was completed? Only a sma=

percentage of the city=92s raw sewage gets dumped into the harbour th=
ese =0A=
days=2C more so after periods of heavy rainfall when the sewage plant=
s are =0A=
overwhelmed by discharge from combined sewers... =0A=
