I happen to agree with you and David that Perisoreus canadensis / M=E9san=
geai du Canada /Canada Jay is the best choice as Canada's national bird=2C =
but I would urge all Canadians to boycott the AMERICAN Ornithologists' Unio=
n name for it of Gray Jay. The AOU Checklist Committee's decision to change=
it from Canada Jay to Grey Jay was an egregious insult to Canadians=2C wit=
h their decision to (mis)-spell 'grey' the American way rubbing salt in the=
wounds. Although most Canadian scientific publications slavishly follow t=
he AOU nomenclature=2C I have felt no obligation to do so for English names=
since that time=2C and have continued to use "Canada Jay" whenever I could=
. Others have done likewise=2C at least giving it as an alternate name=2C a=
nd privately expressing resentment over the change. The late Henri Ouellet=
=2C then Curator of Birds at the National Museum of Canada=2C had a more su=
btle way of emphasizing its importance as a Canadian symbol=2C making it th=
e logo of the International Ornithological Congress held in Canada in 1986.=
Most Canadians were too polite to complain=2C however=2C (and many did not=
care)=2C so I suspect that most American birders were (and are) quite unaw=
are of how annoying this change was to many Canadians.
