Hello:
And just to add confusion, Bayberry was for many years an ornamental in =
our garden; [along with native planted Witch Hazel, Christmas Fern, =
Trillium erectum and Cornus stolonifera and volunteer Lysimachia =
nummularia which have all persisted].=20
One feature of Bayberry, which has not surfaced at least in recent =
exchanges, is its ability to fix nitrogen. This allows it to grow on =
dunes, run down pastures and other impoverished sites. But it is not =
restricted to poor soils and will persist for decades on open richer =
sites where eventually it will decline and die in the shade of larger =
woody plants.
