> I have to contradict Richard a bit here. He is correct that driving =
on Sunday was very tricky and dangerous on account of blowing snow from =
the gale-force westerly winds that were very very cold!! So white-outs =
were common but thankfully not extensive, and most drivers were sensibly =
driving slowly. I was stuck in the Community Hall at Sheffield Mills =
from mid-morning to early afternoon. But Bob Cote was out at the =
viewing and feeding site at the north end of Middle Dyke Road for an =
extensive period, with the relatively small numbers of would-be =
photographers standing with their backs to that wind. Bob said there =
were three different feedings, starting at 10:30 a.m., then at about =
noon, and again at 1 p.m. or so, and he said there were always about 50 =
or more bald eagles there as well as the ravens and gulls etc.
>=20
> I got to the viewing site at 2:15 p.m., weather was still the same =
then, but the SKY WAS FULL OF FLYING EAGLES AND RAVENS etc., all flying =
and soaring and chasing in that stiff, cold wind. The first chase I saw =
was an eagle closely behind a raven that had food in its beak. I agree =
with Bob that at least 50 eagles were present, some in the trees but =
mostly up at all heights in the sky, and up to 10 or more were on the =
ground too where there must have been carcasses that were mostly hidden =
by the snow.
>=20
> So my report here is a testimonial to the toughness of our scavenger =
birds, who are not only tolerant of very cold temperatures, but also =
seem to revel in strong winds. I recall even noticeing the latter =
during the famous Groundhog Day Wind-storm of 1976, my first year in =
Nova Scotia. (I am writing this on Groundhog Day of 2015, and it is =
still quite cold but we are now to experience some heavy snow plus =
freezing rain over the next 24 hours.)
>=20
> Eagle Watch=92s Weekend One experienced very bad conditions this year, =
such that the Saturday activities were cancelled completely. Sunday was =
slightly better but very slow at the Community Hall. Hopefully next =
Saturday and Sunday will be more normal for this time of year. We are =
also hoping to do a regional count of eagles and other raptors next =
Sunday, during the Eagle Watch Weekend Two.
