> FEB. 7, 2015 - Again today at our east Wolfville apartment, presumably =
the same flock of SNOW BUNTINGS was back and getting fed. To our =
menagerie of feeder-birds, add one flicker.
>=20
> Weather today was nice for the continuing Eagle Watch at Sheffield =
Mills =97 cold, about -7 to -8 C., brightly overcast with good =
visibility, wind from west still present but much less than last =
weekend. And lots of heaped-up snow everywhere from the three storms we =
had over the past 10 days or so. The snow plus the cold combine to get =
the eagles to the chicken-feeding locations (which are several in =
addition to the main site at the north end of Middle Dyke Road.
>=20
> In mid-morning I drove to Sheffield Mills via a devious route and saw =
oodles of bald eagles, mostly perched and in groups, probably a total of =
about 75, mostly in three areas: (1) along Sutton Road north from the =
Port Williams school; (2) along Church St., east of hwy. 358, n. of Pt. =
Wms.; and along Middle Dyke Road nw. of its corner with Canard Road or =
hwy. 341.
>=20
> =46rom Bob Cote I heard that gawkers and photographers packed the =
north Middle Dyke Road eagle-feeding site in mid-morning, and that there =
were also lots of eagles there (I didn=92t get a number).  I don=92t =
know how many breakfasts were sold and eaten, but my 1.5 hours at the =
Hall in late morning saw pretty slow activity in the way of visitors to =
the upstairs displays & videos plus photos & carvings for sale.
>=20
> At noon I left the Hall to listen to Quirks & Quarks and visit the =
site at n. M. D. Road. I was surprised to see that most photographers =
and gawkers had left the feeding site by noon. On the ground were great =
black-backed gulls & a few ravens, and about 30 bald eagles were mostly =
perched in groups (very social species in the non-breeding season) with =
a few flying about.
>=20
> Toward the end of Quirks & Quarks I visited a feeder at the corner of =
M. D. Rd. & hwy. 221 (Malcolm Lake), where I saw 3 bl.-c. chickadees, 2+ =
song sparrows, an Am. tree sparrow, 2 blue jays, and 30 mourning doves =
with 2 starlings and a single male brown-headed cowbird =97 I recall =
that last winter Malcolm had multiple cowbirds at his feeder.=20

> Cheers from Jim in Wolfville & Sheffield Mills
