Subject: Eurasian Kestrel and Northern Flicker

About 1PM today Laura and I had just passed through the toll station at
the MacDonald Bridge when a falcon flew overhead flying south-east, just
ahead of the car. The bird showed no bluish back colouration or
underbelly and chest white so I eliminated Merlin and Peregrine Falcon.
It was too small to be a Gyrfalcon and too large to be an American
Kestrel. It was backlit by the cloudy bright sky so facial markings were
not visible but it was darkish overall with few field marks visible
except for the distinctive pointed wings and flight pattern of a Falcon,
. This *may* have been the *Eurasian Kestrel*. With the Hartlen Point
area snowed in it could very well be hunting rodents along the harbour
front, perhaps even rats.

A *Northern Flicker* has become a regular at our feeders in Portuguese
Cove. This is a very skittish bird and flies away when one looks at it
through the window.
