Hi Jim:

We (Sheila and I) saw 2 Cock Pheasants sitting under a bush at North's
Corner, just in our counting zone 'H i ' and earlier on Belcher St, between
the poultry egg processing plant and Tiny Parrish Rd, we counted one male
in flight and three hen Pheasants beside the tree line.

As we drove to Sheffield Mills Community Centre breakfast 8:45 am, we noted
over 50 Bald Eagles congregating in a couple of trees just south of
Blueberry Acres, but only ~20 in the Atlanta/Middle Dyke Rd feeding station.
Did you note the fairly large group of Quebecois photographers gathered at
the latter site, spending much of the morning there ? Each time we passed
there appeared to be only a small number of eagles so I don't know how they
(photographers) fared...

Also there is a possibility that some of our eagles (20) may have come from
that feeding station on Middle Dyke Rd also as these raptors came in mostly
from the south-west to the junction of Jordan Rd/Woodside where we were, at
that farm where Jean Timpa and I saw huge numbers back 10-15 yrs ago. There
seemed to be something attracting the birds just outside the farm barn
though we couldn't see because of high banks of snow, but whatever it was it
could not have been much as the competitive diving into that area didn't
last long. Ravens and crows were in the melee too.

I enjoyed and appreciated seeing the display of raptors, photos and the
nature video upstairs at the community centre, knowing you had a
considerable input in having it there. Thank you for that.

Cheers,

Judy

FEB. 8 (Sunday), 2015 - Today is our first attempt at the 34th Annual Cyril
K. Coldwell Count of Eagles/Raptors in Eastern King's County. Weather
conditions are nearly ideal, with continuing very cold temperatures with
significant wind-chills plus heaps and heaps of piled up plowed snow along
all roads (making some dykeland roads iffy to impossible). Sky was brightly
overcast, occasionally sunny, with super visibility (except for the walls of
snow).

This note is just a very brief summary of our results. Sixteen field
parties totalling 30 people covered designated areas for just one hour, 10
a.m. to 11 a.m. (to minimize double-counting of individual raptors).

Bald eagles totalled 575, a near record number. BUT about 20 eagles
departed Hortonville early in the hour and flew toward Avonport across the
Gaspereau River, where that field party may have counted them. Thus the
true total would be perhaps 555. Of the ones pigeon-holed as to adult vs.
immature, 62% were adults, 38% immatures.

Other raptors encountered were 68 red-tailed hawks, 2 rough-legged hawks
(one light-phase, one dark), no harriers, no peregrine falcons, 2
sharp-shinned hawks, 1 merlin, no short-eared owls, 1 barred owl (Bernard
Forsythe at dusk), and 1 probable snowy owl (seen by Malcolm Miles near
Hollow Brook Power House at Lumsden Reservoir, on a power-pole in a cleared
area of a big power line).

Other natural history observations included about 10 coyotes (ne. dykelands
at Grand Pre), 4 hooded mergansers, about 40 ravens (from just one
observer), 1 robin, 150 Bohemian waxwings, 20 horned larks, 80 snow
buntings.

Bald eagles were basically everywhere, but concentrations included 130 south
& east of Canning, 115 in Sheffield Mills area, 70 in Avonport area, 60 at
ne. dykelands of North Grand Pre to Hortonville, 50 west & north of Port
Williams. At 11:30 a.m. I noticed 20+ eagles being fed at the corner of
Church St. and Hwy. 358 (north of Pt. Wms.).

THANKS TO ALL PARTICIPANTS, who now can relax - our next count will probably
be about the same date in 2016.

Cheers from Jim in Wolfville.
