There's also some interesting biophysics research that strongly 
suggests that tails on butterflies (and I would guess, by 
implication, moths) increase flight efficiency by helping to shed the 
large vortices (generated by their larger-than-needed-for-flight 
wings) that interfere with the wing upstroke. For example, see

This paper compares Monarch and Swallowtail butterflies that are 
remarkably similar except for the tails of the swallowtail. See, 
specifically, the last two or three paragraphs in the right-most 
column on the 2nd page.
