All Welcome! This Friday=92s meeting will have a presentation by Dr David Turner on " Th= e Eyes are Still Good Detectors!" While new detectors have had a positive effect on the precision of observat= ions by amateur and professional observers, and have made it easier to acqu= ire high quality images of astronomical objects, such progress often overlo= oks the power and precision of simple eye estimates, which are useful in ma= ny situations. Described is evidence for the high precision of eye estimate= s of brightness when conditions warrant them, as well as a variety of techn= iques that make visual photometry easier and more reliable than is sometime= s the case. Examples are presented of stars for which CCD or photoelectric = observations can be problematic, and visual observations would be beneficia= l, in some cases for scientific offshoots. All, of course, can be found in = the Observer=92s Handbook. There will be a What=92s Up of the March/April night sky which also referen= ces to the Explore the Universe Program. There will be an overview of the v= ariable star Algol (Beta Perseus), the demon star, which is an eclipsing bi= nary and first recorded as a variable brightness star in 1667. Paul will ha= ve more to talk about on this. We will also be treated to a number of recent images our members have taken= and announcements.
