Thanks to all who replied. I do want to say, though, that =93our=94 =
song sparrows have always hunted through the dead leaves and =
grass=97summer and winter (when there is bare ground). They are around =
the yard year around and can always be found hopping around on the =
ground near the fence. They also feed at the feeder.
Jane
p.s. Someone on Erskine street has spotted and photographed a red =
bellied woodpecker. I asked her friend, who reported it to us, to post =
on naturens.

No one seems to have risen to your challenge so...
=20
Many species that come to feeders are essentially ground feeders. After =
high winds which cast out feed from the feeders, you will notice that =
birds prefer to feed on the ground rather than at the feeders. It's =
natural for them. Song Sparrows will tend to feed on the ground until =
one discovers the feeder(s). If you have a ground feeder, Song Sparrows =
will feed there whereas Fox Sparrows will continue to scratch in the =
leaves. Probably because of this Fox Sparrows do not tend to winter in =
NS. All these common sparrow species are hardy enough to winter here if =
food is available.

Derek=92s recent post from our neighborhood has prompted us to look more =
closely at our little (c. 6 this winter) flock of song sparrows, to see =
if there might be a fox sparrow among them. We went to the Cornell =
website, where we looked at the comparison: =
http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Fox_Sparrow/id. Now, we are =
mystified by their statement that =93Song Sparrows do not habitually =
scratch in the leaf litter to find food, as Fox Sparrows do.=94 The =
song sparrows in our yard are ground-feeding birds. They are always =
hunting in among the leaves and weeds at the edge of our garden. Even =
with all the snow cover, they prefer to peck at the seed that=92s fallen =
rather than go to the feeder perches.=20
Can someone please explain?
Cheers.
Jane and Dave
