Hi all,

With Killdeer arriving, it's just a matter of time before Piping Plover
show up. We are always very interested in spring observations, so please
share sightings.

Also, please check plover legs for bands. Environment Canada is leading an
important research study to identify wintering areas and understand
survival of adults and juveniles.

Plovers may be wearing a flag on their upper leg that is grey or black (or
white, though limited number were used in 2013). Each flag has a unique
code of two letters and/ or numbers. Codes can be challenging to read with
binoculars, but a zoom camera or scope works well. A silver band may also
be visible on the other leg (upper part).

Reporting bands:
- Flag colour, two letter and/ or number code, and leg location
- Location, date, time of sighting
- Any notes on behaviour
- Photos of the banded bird are greatly appreciated
- Band reports can be sent to cheri.gratto-trevor@ec.gc.ca or to
nsplovers@gmail.com and we'll forward it on.

Here's hoping we have a successful plover breeding season in NS and
beyond. Appreciate your attention and interest. Feel free to get in touch
with any questions.

All the best,
Sue
