Hi All,

Acoustic monitoring of spring nocturnal migration commenced at a location
near Canso, NS, on the night of April 11. The recording equipment is setup
in coastal spruce and scrub overlooking a large bog, about 600 meters from
the coast. Winter-like conditions prevailed during these two weeks, and
there was little evidence of migration. Only 39 night flight calls were
recorded. Dark-eyed Juncos and Song Sparrows predominated. The first Hermit
Thrush was heard on the morning of April 19. A Savannah Sparrow on April 15
did not resemble the call of the Ipswich Sparrow but these can be difficult
to distinguish. The totals of night flight calls for April 11 to 24 are as
follows:

Dark-eyed Junco: 16

Song Sparrow: 11

Hermit Thrush: 6

Fox Sparrow: 2

Unidentified songbirds: 2

White-throated Sparrow: 1

Savannah Sparrow: 1

Total: 39
