Kevin Lantz and Dorothy Poole accompanied me tonight on my third owl monito=
ring route=2C which starts at Middlewood at the farside of Crooked Lake and=
then back through to Volgler's Cove and ends at East Port Medway. It was =
a phenomenal evening and the brightest that I've ever been out on this rout=
e or any route even though it was totally overcast with only one or two sta=
rs showing every now and then and the moon showing through off and on. We =
had barred owls only=2C but on seven out of ten stops. The total came to e=
ight. I saw an owl of unknown species a long ways up the road=2C which cou=
ld have been part of a pair barred owls that came in near the end of the su=
rvey period for that stop. =20
=20
I heard my first spring peeper for the year by the LaHave Ferry this evenin=
g. After that on the owl survey spring peepers were actively calling at ev=
ery stop except one and at some of the stops very vocal. At other stops wh=
ere previously they were extremely loud=2C there were few. Maybe the water=
level being higher than normal was why. The wood frogs were making up for=
a late start. They were very vocal. At one stop=2C I've never heard so m=
any wood frogs in on location. They put the noise level at that stop to th=
e highest level. The same level of noise extended a long ways. At that lo=
cation I walked back a woods road a long ways from the highway and the whol=
e way along the level of wood frogs calling did not lower one bit. I canno=
t even try to estimate the numbers for this species that had to be at that =
location. =20
=20
In addition we had more other target species for the survey than ever befor=
e. These included one ruffed grouse drumming=2C three American woodcocks a=
nd two Wilson's snipe. I heard coyotes at one stop and common loons were v=
ery vocal with the tremello call. Probably about 15-20 of them over the 21=
.3 km. =20
