Hi Paul & All,
The waterways I have in mind are all mountain streams; Sharp Brook =
from the base of the mountain up to near the top (site of an old water =
mill), Ross Creek, Canada Creek and several other similar streams which =
I visited at times without consulting a map. These have gravel or stony =
bottoms, woodland near the waterways, shallow in most sections and in =
unusually dry weather much water flow if any is within the gravel; dry =
at surface. Stream insects probably cling to rocks or live mostly in =
voids within the gravel bottom. So siltation is a serious blow to both =
insects and Trout. None of these had to be folded to fit into a frying =
pan but at one time they were reliably numerous.
=20
The Cornwallis River is a very different watercourse in most =
respects; spring fed from a wide valley plus inflow from many streams, =
water in some wide portions where cattle have broken the banks can be =
low in very dry weather but not in the better streaches where the river =
is narrow and deep with steep banks. Siltation can not be a problem =
because the waterway fauna is adapted to silty water and does not need =
chinks between rocks to survive dry periods. Much of the watershed on =
the valley floor is limed farmland so the river is relatively immune to =
acid rain effects. Of five water samples taken from the Cornwallis in =
1954 during the summer and fall of 1954 (Master's Thesis) the minimum pH =
was 6.5 and by late Sept. had increased to 8.0. I vaguely recall also =
the the matrix of (or leachate from ?) our Triassic Sandstone is =
slightly alkaline.
=20
Other waterways that for years were a long walk in had good fishing =
which suddenly became poor after they were readily reached by driving.=20
Once again no Bass; just fishing pressure which exceeded productivity.
Yt, Dave Webster, Kentville

=EF=BB=BF An interesting question Dave.=20
If you compare Kings County to PEI which has much the same =
drawbacks that you mention,=20
4 differences are immediately noticeable.=20
1 - no bass in PEI=20
2 - no large dams in PEI, a few low height affairs but not like =
Kings County.=20
3 - Fish Kills in PEI are prominent in the media. Not a news item =
in NS.=20
4 - The daily bag limit for trout in PEI is 16, in NS its 5. The =
trout population in PEI seems healthy=20
with very little stocking.=20
I think # 2 is very suspect as the prime reason for the demise of =
trout in Kings County.=20
