> MAY 20, 2015 - Blomidon Provincial Park: vernal pond on Jodrey Trail =
hugely swollen, which is no surprise after this past winter and very =
late spring with oodles of snow; in bloom were quite a few red trilliums =
and a few American fly-honeysuckles; almost in bloom were red-berried =
elderberry and introduced gooseberries (latter along the road to the =
campground from the registration building.

> Below the park, the cliff nest of bald eagles had both adult eagles =
plus at least one eaglet, perhaps a week to 10 days old with creamy =
whitish down but still quite small.

> At dusk I went to the Robie Tufts Nature Centre in Wolfville to watch =
and count the roosting CHIMNEY SWIFTS. I arrived at 8:45 p.m. (Herald =
sunset time 8:40) and stayed until about 9:12 p.m. A healthy-looking =
flock of swifts was flying back and forth at low altitude and a few were =
diving at the chimney a bit, but none entered until 8:59. Sky was 2/3 =
cloudy/overcast, 1/3 clear, with good lighting that gradually diminished =
as time went by. Cool (temp. unmeasured, but was 12 C. an hour later at =
home), very windy (from west), but the wind did not seem to affect the =
flying swifts, which as usual kept me waiting a long time. =20
>=20
> At 8:50 I was a bit surprised to see ONE SWIFT EXITED from the =
chimney. Then at 8:59, about 27 swifts dropped into the chimney, =
followed by a lull until 9:03, when about 53 more dropped in. Single =
laggard swifts dropped in at 9:07 & 9:08 p.m. I recorded 82+ chimney =
swifts, and a bonus was a lovely sliver crescent Moon low in the west. =
My =91+=92 sign is for any later laggards that were present and dropped =
in after my departure.
