Hi All, May 23, 2015
As I think I have mentioned previously, while it is harmless enough =
to move native plants around within their known (presumed native) range =
and desirable to use native plants as ornamentals it becomes problematic =
if they are moved well beyond the known range unless the move is =
recorded.
As one example of this, in the early 50's, Elodea for use at Acadia =
in Botany class was collected each fall near Truro, Dr. Smith mused that =
it would be convenient to have a local source so I acted on this hint, =
put some in Tannery Pond, Wolfville and recorded the event by depositing =
a sub-sample as an Herbarium specimen.
Many plants are getting moved around these days by earth moving =
equipment, especially along highways and marshalling yards and =
especially plants adapted to disturbed soil, but it would decrease =
uncertainty/confusion in future if moves of other plants appreciably =
beyond their known range were recorded as an Herbarium specimen.=20
Yours truly, Dave Webster, Kentville
