Also, Norway Maple will exude milky sap from the petiole base when a =
leaf is broken off at the base of the petiole (where it would eventually =
break away in the fall). Our Native Maples do not exude milky sap. And =
NM perioles are unusually long.
Norway Maple, if open grown, will yield a good sap for syrup or =
sugar (based on one tree which I tapped in 1991). And even in a hedge =
they grow rapidly. I have yet to see NM larger than a few cm diameter in =
woodland but if free from competition so it can develop a good crown I =
think it has potential as a firewood tree because it grows rapidly in =
girth.

  Your suspicions are right, not
A sugar or a red. That's a Norway maple. Whisker tips rather than the =
rounded lobes of a sugar maple.=20
