    Speaking of impressive sturgeon, the July 10-12 edition of Metro =
Halifax carried a brief story about a five-year-old Florida girl who =
died after being struck by a large sturgeon that leaped into the boat =
she was riding in with her family. Her brother suffered a broken wrist =
and her mother suffered unspecified facial injuries.=20
   The incident took place on northern Florida=E2=80=99s Suwannee River. =
According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission this =
was the first fatality recorded from a sturgeon strike from this river. =
What a freak accident!

Subject: [NatureNS] Striper Tagging

Hi All=20
Yesterday was live Striper tagging in the Acadia Tagging short course.=20
For that we went to a weir out in the bay. And a great day it was!=20
Stripers were not very plentiful - 3 in all but that's fishing.=20
Sturgeon made up for them. 10 - 12 in all  between 1 m and 2 m in =
length.=20
A 2 m sturgeon is an impressive fish. I always wondered when I saw them =
jump=20
if they were really sturgeon - now I know for sure. Very interesting.=20
There was a lot of smaller fish, Shad, Gaspereaux, Herring, Mackerel, =
Tommy Cods=20
Smelts and silversides. On the flat side there was Flounders and Skates. =

Small squid were plentiful, about the size of my finger or a little =
bigger with big eyes.=20
I was told there was quite a few big ones earlier but none just now.=20
For birds there was a good flock of gulls, Eagles and Herons. I didn't =
review=20
the birds for species. They were waiting til we left then the feast =
would start!=20
A fun day - a real adventure.=20
Get out and enjoy the summer=20
