Hi Fred & All, July 16, 2015
I notice that a large area of Sugar Maple range to the North and East is
free of Black Maple. Therefore these taxa are different.

I understand that they can cross and also that they resemble each other
in many respects; therefore they are similar. But clearly crossing rarely
happens if, as you say they are sympatric throughout the range of Black
Maple. Therefore there is some quite effective barrier to make unassisted
crossing extremely infrequent.

Unless one can arrange to come back in 50,000 years or so to see how
this turns out then the above is about as much as one can know because
systems are defined by their properties. Whether the self-proclaimed experts
of the day conclude that Sugar and Black are distinct species or a
species-variety pair is irrelevant window-dressing because that conclusion
can readily be reversed.
