Bernard Burke, who lives not too far from me, has heard the same and on one occasion saw that the source of sound was blue jay(s). The only time I saw a bird that COULD have been associated with the noise, it was also a blue jay. We have had no sign or ravens or merlins in the immediate vicinity, so I am now hypothesizing blue jays.
