James,
The =E2=80=9Cincidental take=E2=80=9D regulations of Environment Canada =
seems to imply that the management of the Bridgewater Exhibition must =
exercise due diligence in protecting the nest and eggs of migratory =
birds. Unfortunately, I don=E2=80=99t see anything in the regulation =
about precocial young, that is, birds that leave the nest soon after =
hatching but are nonetheless very vulnerable to predation and =
disturbance. This is something you might ask the Canadian Wildlife =
Service to clarify for you. See http://www.ec.gc.ca/paom-itmb/ for more =
info.

Normally by now killdeer would be at the age where the young would have =
flight. The exhibition for Bridgewater starts tomorrow. Normally a =
pair of killdeer nest on the grounds and the young are at the point =
where they can fly, so usually this is not a problem. This is not the =
case this year. The pair have four young and they would need a week or =
a week and a half yet before flight. I watched the one adult today with =
the four young. Someone had two dogs and was throwing a ball for the =
dogs and the adult killdeer as you can imagine was freaking out. She =
successfully led the young away from the dogs and had them by the road =
when I walked by. The exhibition officially starts tomorrow and set-up =
is still ongoing. It is in the area where the adult killdeer and young =
usually tend. The parking area will be full where they could go when =
activity is on the grounds, but tomorrow that area will be occupied and =
there will be people activity all over the place. I suspect the young =
will not make it through the week. We shall see what happens though. =20
