> JULY 27, 2015 - Two days ago I got a second-hand message from Heather =
MacDonald from Avonport Beach, saying =93The birds are back!=94, meaning =
that flocks of shorebirds had been seen there. I haven=92t heard any =
details yet on that.

> EVANGELINE BEACH =97 high tide was 10 a.m., with a low amplitude of =
9.3 metres? =97 I walked east from the public stairs but got a late =
start at 12:25 p.m., so the tide had already ebbed much further than I =
like (my error)(my entire walk to end of beach and back took a bit more =
than an hour) =97 overcast and muggy-warm, and it quickly was obvious =
that NO-SEE-UMS were abundant and hungry =97 but visibility was pretty =
good, compared with a bright sunny day =97 I found a few fresh clumps of =
two seaweeds, knotted wrack (Ascophyllum) and dulse (Palmaria? is old =
name), and fresh clumps of Flustra bryozoans, all of which would have =
been at the low tide zone or subtidal (so there must have been some =
recent big waves in the Minas Basin), but still no squid egg-sacs yet =97 =
I saw three separate bald eagles (one adult flew out from the woods and =
directly to displace an immature eagle that was perched on a rock near =
the ebbing tide line (this is routine eagle behaviour that we see =
year-round)) =97 1 dead adult double-crested cormorant on upper beach, =
the first one I have ever seen along the beach =97 bunches of =
peeps/small shorebirds seen were 10,100,15,175,100,100, which total up =
to a maximum of 425 peeps (at high tide Rick Whitman saw 500 to 1000 =
peeps along the Hortonville dyke, and some of mine might well have been =
counted by Rick).
