Great excitement here in White Point, Queens this morning. I planted a
couple milkweed plants shared with me by the kids at Mersey Tobeatic
Institute a few years ago. The plants struggled and this year I had just
one third year stand remaining. I did try to get more plants started but so
far no luck.
The surviving stand is close to the road by my sign so not in easy viewing
from the house.
This morning I picked up my mail and checked the plants down roadside and
was delighted to see a number of caterpillars in varying sizes on the
leaves. Now I worry there may not be enough to feed them long enough for
them to move to the next cycle.
I read something about a woman in NB, I believe, who has raised a number of
them. I cannot find that reference. I wonder if anyone here would know to
whom I am referring, and if anyone here knows of anyone tagging the
butterflies?
So far we are seeing a few fritillaries. One is missing quite a chunk of
wing on the right side. There are cabbage whites and wood nymphs, a few
sulphurs and that is pretty much it. Apparently one Monarch was here.. :?))
