For those of you who are in Lunenburg County and birding there could be a s=
pecial bird at Sleepy Hollow Apartments in Lunenburg. It is at the locatio=
n of Cathy Ramey where the brown thrasher spent most of the winter last yea=
r and where there also has been other rarities like red-bellied woodpeckers=
=2C lark sparrows=2C fox sparrows=2C indigo buntings and other uncommon spe=
cies over the years. Cathy originally thought the bird coming to her suet =
could be a yellow-bellied flycatcher. I've never heard of a flycatcher visi=
ting suet=2C but who knows. The bird has two white wingbars. So it could b=
e simply a Baltimore oriole=2C a pine warbler=2C a tanager=2C red crossbill=
=2C or maybe something else. We don't know at this point. Cathy would kno=
w a Baltimore oriole as she has had them there and has seen them before. T=
he bird was present this morning around 10:30 according to Cathy and again =
after 15:00 this afternoon. I was there just prior to 15:00=2C but the wea=
ther was foul and the heavens opened with rain and wind at the time. I did=
not see the bird. Cathy noted that the bird was picking up wood chips thi=
s afternoon=2C which is odd. If the bird is present tomorrow she is going =
to try to get a picture. I plan to try for it again early afternoon tomorr=
ow before I go to a previously scheduled engagement. I'll keep you posted =
if we can get an ID and if it turns out to be something worthy of going to =
see especially with the winter list looming on the horizen. I have some ot=
her birders also trying to catch the bird there. If you go to the intersec=
tion in Lilydale when coming from Blockhouse go straight across the interse=
ction and towards the big hill by the hospital. There will be a left hand =
turn. There is another left hand turn. Do not take that. Sleepy Hollow A=
partments is right there on the left side shortly after the left hand turn =
that you are not to take. The feeders are in behind the apartments and the=
re is only one suet feeder. At this point until we know what the bird is I=
would not advise coming any distance=2C I'm just giving a heads up to anyo=
ne who happens to be in the area.
