Here are your two chipping sites Dave...

Yours truely an ATV recreational user who lives in the country side but
not allowed to use it. Paved streets and traffic lights=C2=A0with cement
sidewalks must be more enviromentally acceptable. ARGH

=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 My memory may be incorrect but, according to it, hardwoo=
d was
being chipped in Guysborough Co. for export to Europe=C2=A0by 1990. If not
that early then at least for a substantial time.
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Does anyone know the history of chipped wood exports and=
 how
healthy or unhealthy the regrowth has been from those harvested in the
first five years ?
=C2=A0
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 I think it would be impossible to build all of the nuanc=
es and
subtle readjustments of soil-climate-plant relationships into a model
and understandably the Noseworthy version, so far as I can see, made no
attempt to do so.
=C2=A0
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Podzols have a very high weathering rate for a good reas=
on.
Weathering can be represented by the general equation--
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 =C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 Mineral + H+=C2=A0 > Cation=C2=A0
and the rate of the forward reaction will be increased by leaching.
Plants do not absorb nutrients in proportion to their=C2=A0concentration in=

soil solution [selective absorption of nutrients was documented by
about 1930]. If Ca were to become limiting then one would expect
decrease of Ca in the soil solution=C2=A0which would force the weathering
reaction of Ca containing minerals.
=C2=A0
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 That being said, the Noseworthy thesis if useful with re=
spect to
aspects which are less affected by subtle readjustments. There are good
tabulations of nutrient content of various species and an array of
graphs which portray nutrient removal under various harvesting
scenarios.
=C2=A0
=C2=A0=C2=A0=C2=A0 One important message generated by this model, when comb=
ined
with common sense,=C2=A0is that it would be unwise to harvest the entire
top for biomass. Harvesting=C2=A0should remove only stems and leave
branches and tops for a variety of reasons nutrient removal being one
of them.
