Hi Donna & All,
This is far from an ID but larvae of some craneflies are remarkably =
cold hardy. The following is cut from an Insect file-- Quattro-Pro and =
Outlook Express don't get along well apparently.
Collected in North Alton, Dec 2001 from debris on polyethylene;
kept outdoors; emerged after June 5, 2002; pupal cases in vial;
also leg in envelope; distal veins have a few microtrichia.
=20
They turned out to be Craneflies; Tipula ? sp. They were in =
snow/ice/cold air all winter.
Yt, DW

Subject: [NatureNS] strange large grub on snow to ID
I need the help of those naturalists who revel in the entomological =
world:
=20
I received a photo from my sister (link below) wanting to know the =
name of this large =E2=80=98grub=E2=80=99 found near the Bridgewater =
area on Jan 13th. There were two of them crawling on top of the fresh =
snow. They were almost the size a =E2=80=9Ca little finger=E2=80=9D, =
referring to both length and diameter of a small finger. (A good snack =
for a bird, except they are now apparently in a jar.)
=20
My sister has a sense of humor, stating:=20
=20
=E2=80=9C... Unless you live up north, in the Arctic, where that =
"husky dusky maiden lived, and where the ice worms nest ...??" Do you =
suppose this is an ice worm? Lol. They were almost the size of her =
little finger. Let me know if you can identify them. She rescued them =
and put them in a jar.=E2=80=9D
=20
Thanks for the help. (This is my first attempt at Flickr. Hope it =
works!)
