Hi all,

I finished cleaning out my swallow boxes and observing how many of them=
were used in 2015. The results were down a bit based on 2012-2014 results.=
I'm not sure if that's because of the late spring last year or other Tree =
Swallow related issues.

I added 6 new boxes in 2015 bringing the new total to 30. I also replac=
ed some of the older boxes and repaired others. The 2015 results were:

15 - boxes with nests and breeding evidence (one nest is probably from 2014=
, as one box wasn't cleaned last season because it contained a live Flying =
Squirrel)

1 - box with partial nest (no feathers or breeding evidence)

14 - empty boxes

Seven of the boxes had squirrel nests/roosts; some in boxes without nes=
ts others on top on Tree Swallow nests. No squirrels were found. The 2015 r=
esults were:

2 Flying Squirrel nests in empty boxes

3 partial Flying Squirrel nests in empty boxes

2 Red Squirrel nests on top of successful Tree Swallow nests

3 successful nests contained unhatched eggs (1 with 1 egg; 1 with 2 eggs an=
d 1 with 3 eggs).

The only mystery was in the box I had left uncleaned from last season =
because it had a live Flying Squirrel in it. I thought I had seen a Flying =
Squirrel nest on top of a Tree Swallow nest in the box but when I checked i=
t today the box contained only the Tree Swallow nest. I must have just assu=
med there was a Flying Squirrel nest in the box, but who knows. All the bes=
t.
