Hi All,

The weather radar in Portland and Caribou, Maine, indicated two nights of
moderate to strong migration. The first was the night of April 16-17.
However, there was a strong northeast wind blowing down the Bay of Fundy
that night which likely blocked the crossing of songbirds to Nova Scotia.
This appears to be confirmed in eBird records that showed little change in
the abundance of Palm and Yellow-rumped Warblers, Ruby-crowned Kinglets, and
Savannah and White-throated Sparrows on April 17th. The second night of
moderate to strong migration on the Maine weather radars was the night of
April 21-22. This night started with a light southwest wind over the Bay of
Fundy at surface to 100-meter altitude that veered to the northwest during
the night. These more favourable winds appeared to have resulted in birds
crossing the Bay of Fundy to Nova Scotia as the abundance of Palm and
Yellow-rumped Warblers, and Savannah and White-throated Sparrows increased
conspicuously on April 22nd as reported on eBird. Also on this night, my
recording equipment at Carleton, Yarmouth County, detected one or two flight
calls of Savannah Sparrow, American Tree Sparrow, Song Sparrow, and Palm
Warbler.

John
