Hi all,

A scientific paper was published this week that shows that the fasting
required during long-distance migration causes mercury contamination, stored
in the muscle of birds, to be released in concentrated form to the blood
stream. This can make the birds forgetful and disoriented. Could this mean
that we see more rare birds in recent decades because they are poisoned and
not solely because there are more birders?

An international study in the 2000s showed Nova Scotia to be a mercury
hotspot. Further studies documented the negative effects of mercury on
breeding birds like loons. This new study shows that it can also affect
their migration.
