--- URGENT - EXPERIENCED BIRDERS NEEDED ---
Dougan & Associates is an ecological consulting firm based in Guelph, Ontar=
io. However, we are currently starting up a Fredericton office. Our areas o=
f interest are terrestrial ecology (plant & wildlife), ecological restorati=
on design, and GIS analysis. Wendy Frise is an Ecologist specializing in bo=
tany and is the new Regional Manager for the Atlantic Provinces.
We recently received a Request for Proposal (RFP) from Correctional Service=
s Canada (CSC) to complete surveys for Species-at-Risk (SAR) on four sites =
in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. Bird surveys are part of the work, and we=
are looking to possibly hire up to 4 experienced birders in New Brunswick =
and/or Nova Scotia who would be willing to help undertake these surveys at =
the CSC properties in 2016. Details of the properties and Species-at-Risk t=
o be surveyed are as follows:
Atlantic Institution, Renous NB:
* The institution is situated on 544 hectares of land in the rural comm=
unity of Renous, New Brunswick.
* CSC estimates 6 days of bird surveys focused on the following SAR: Ba=
ld Eagle, Bank Swallow, Barn Swallow, Canada Warbler, Chimney Swift, Easter=
n Wood-Pewee, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Rusty Blackbird and Wood Thrush.
* It also includes targeted crepuscular and nocturnal surveys for Chimn=
ey Swift, Common Nighthawk, and Whip-poor-will.
Dorchester properties, Dorchester NB:
* Dorchester Penitentiary is in Dorchester, New Brunswick. The institut=
ion is situated on 777.5 hectares of land. It also shares a property with t=
he Shepody Healing Centre, a regional treatment centre.
* CSC estimates 6 days of bird surveys focused on the following SAR: Ba=
ld Eagle, Bank Swallow, Barn Swallow, Bobolink, Canada Warbler, Chimney Swi=
ft, Eastern Meadowlark, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Olive-sided Flycatcher, and Per=
egrine Falcon.
* It also includes targeted crepuscular and nocturnal surveys for Chimn=
ey Swift, Common Nighthawk, Short-eared Owl, Whip-poor-will, and Yellow Rai=
l.
Springhill Institution, Springhill NS:
* Springhill Institution is in Springhill, Nova Scotia. It is situated =
on 170 hectares of land.
* CSC estimates 5 days of bird surveys focused on the following SAR: Ba=
nk Swallow, Barn Swallow, Bobolink, Canada Warbler, Chimney Swift, Eastern =
Meadowlark, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Olive-sided Flycatcher, Rusty Blackbird and=
Wood Thrush.
* It also includes targeted crepuscular and nocturnal surveys for Chimn=
ey Swift, Common Nighthawk, and Whip-poor-will.
Nova Institution for Women, Truro NS:
* The institution is situated on 11.31 hectares of land.
* CSC estimates 3 days of bird surveys focused on the following SAR: Ba=
rn Swallow, Chimney Swift, Eastern Wood-Pewee, Olive-sided Flycatcher and W=
ood Thrush.
* It also includes targeted crepuscular and nocturnal surveys for Chimn=
ey Swift and Common Nighthawk.
We are in the process of trying to determine the exact study area limits fo=
r each site. We are also in the process of trying to verify the CSC estimat=
es with respect to survey effort and will provide additional information if=
it becomes available.
Finally, we are aware that it is getting a bit late in the year to be plann=
ing for some of these targeted bird surveys and have put a question to Corr=
ection Service Canada to find out if there is a possibility to shift some o=
f these surveys to 2017.
