Today, a 'trio' of chimney swifts flew 'loud and low' over our house roof.
I wondered if it is the same three from last year. There were three
consistently together through last season, evidently one a 'helper'.
Thanks to James Churchill's video from last year, I now realize that
actually seeing them fly in-out of a chimney is not as easy as one might
think.  They are very fast and quiet on approach to the chimney nest site;
nothing like the roosting events. There's a large old chimney in my
neighbourhood that I am now informed once had nesting swifts in it. I've
got to check out this year (once I explain to the neighbours that I've not
become a voyeur of sorts).

Barn nesting:

My parents' barn is once again 'home' to a pair of chimney swifts who have
spent the last two nights in the hayloft. The process begins again... Time
will tell whether they will build a new nest this year or just fix up the
old one from last year. There is also a pair at Don and Jude's barn in
Cherryfield (as there always is without fail for decades now). They opened
their small trap door to the hay loft as soon as they appeared on May 13th.
There are likely other barns being populated by chimney swifts right now,
but I haven't had time to get out and check them. Another barn in
Cherryfield had its loft window opened up last year to see if swifts would
re-occupy it after being closed up for years. Indications of a previous
swift nest were still visible on the wall. Lots of young swifts are being
raised in the area, so perhaps some offspring will nest there this year.
Who knows!

Lots of new discoveries await this year. Checking barns in the New Ross-
Farmington-New Germany area might be interesting. I need to retire to find
time to do these things, or, wait now..., maybe someone else might like to
try this? It's fun. It just takes some explaining to folks why you want to
look at the dark recesses of a hayloft wall for an extremely tiny stick nest
glued to a wall... Such a strange request; barn owners will know one cannot
possibly make up such a request unless it's genuine, ha, ha.

Let's hope for lots of bugs this year for the aerial insectivores!

Donna

MAY 24, 2016 - CHIMNEY SWIFTS AT DUSK AT ROBIE TUFTS NATURE CENTRE IN
WOLFVILLE:

Sky about 50% clear, 50% cloudy (with big dark clouds), warm, muggy, 20 C.,
calm, pleasant evening.

Sunset time was 8:45 p.m.

I had some helpers tonight, although there were small disagreements about
near misses vs. entries by the swifts into the chimney. Helpers included
Tony Napoli, Hope Gillis, and Carm & Ernie Enzinas.

8 swifts entered the chimney at 8:58 p.m.;

4 more in at 8:59;

20 more in at 9:01;

2 more at 9:03;

8 more at 9:05;

1 more in at 9:15;

1 more in at 9:16;

last one in at 9:19,

then too dark to really see any more.

45+ TOTAL SWIFTS TONIGHT IN THE CHIMNEY.
