Subject: [NS-RBA] NS Big Day - May 29=C2=A0=C2=A0Nova Scotia Big Day Record=

gan=C2=A0After a few weeks of (mostly online) planning and a day of scoutin=
g, the four of us set out yesterday to attempt to break the Nova Scotia Big=
Day Record, which, according to the ABA reports, was set on June 23, 1999 =
by Clarence Stevens Jr et al., at 145 species. We began shortly after midni=
ght at Amherst Point MBS, and finished just before midnight on Bon Portage =
Island, covering areas around Amherst, Upper Tantallon, Grand Pre/Kentville=
, the Annapolis Valley, Digby and the southwest shore from Yarmouth to Cape=
Sable Island. In total we drove 921.2km, did 3km by boat and 17.6km on foo=
t (mostly at a jog-sprint pace as we were pressed for time!) and submitted =
58 checklists to eBird.
BIGGEST MISSES: Common Merganser, Black-crowned Night-Heron, Sharp-shinned =
Hawk, Broad-winged Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Northern Saw-whet Owl, American =
Kestrel, Merlin, Northern Waterthrush, Red Crossbill. A few of these failed=
to show at stakeouts, and a cold, cloudy afternoon meant that raptors were=
thin. In addition, a few species we=E2=80=99d had the day before or stakeo=
ut rarities/lingering species failed to show, and we ran out of time to put=
in additional effort. These included Brant, Red-breasted Merganser, Spruce=
Grouse, Green Heron, Snowy Egret, American Coot, Common Gallinule, 8 speci=
es of shorebird, Northern Goshawk, Red-bellied Woodpecker, Peregrine Falcon=
, Great Crested Flycatcher, Mourning Warbler, Summer Tanager and Indigo Bun=
ting. Cape Sable Island was a bit of a flop, with most of the lingering sho=
rebirds we were counting on having gone elsewhere, and we ran out of time t=
o look for a few species.
BIGGEST SURPRISES/RARITIES: Long-tailed Duck and Little Blue Heron (Pond Rd=
, Pubnico), Semipalmated Plover (Amherst lagoons), Common Murre (Point Prim=
, Digby), Glaucous and Lesser Black-backed Gulls (but no Iceland=E2=80=A6, =
Grand Pre), Willow Flycatcher (Belleisle Marsh), Gray-cheeked Thrush (Amher=
st Point), Scarlet Tanager (Montague Row, Digby). Our best bird of the day =
came right at the end, with a distant adultBROWN BOOBY flying by Bon Portag=
e Island while we were seawatching. A detailed account of this will be on e=
Bird shortly.
In addition, this was part of the Great Canadian Birdathon, to raise money =
for bird research and conservation. So far our team, the Taylor=E2=80=99s S=
wiftlets (we are all part of the Taylor Lab at Acadia University), has rais=
ed over $1000 this year! A part of our donation total will go toward resear=

Since I know everyone has been reading this in anticipation, our list by AB=
A rules for the day was 146, just barely nabbing us the record! Our individ=
ual totals were Dave =E2=80=93 156, Lucas =E2=80=93 149, Dom =E2=80=93 148 =
and Avery =E2=80=93 143. Judging by the number of species we missed, a Big =
Day in the 160-170 range should be possible with a bit of practice and refi=
nement (and a bit more scouting!).
P.S. We ALMOST missed Osprey and Ring-billed Gull=E2=80=A6
