Hi All,

The radars in Maine showed very light to moderate density of echoes until
the morning of 5 June. After that, there was no sign of nocturnal bird
migration. The records on eBird showed the peak of the very latest of our
spring migrants on the following dates:

1 June, Red-eyed Vireo

3 June, Yellow-bellied Flycatcher

6 June, Alder Flycatcher and Swainson's Thrush

7 June, Mourning Warbler

Calls were sparse in my acoustic recordings at Carleton, Yarmouth County and
are summarized in the table below.

Based on my experience this spring in following the radars in Maine, eBird
records, and my acoustic monitoring stations, I would make the following
working hypothesis:

In the early spring (March to mid-April), birds are entering Nova Scotia
primarily in the Upper Bay of Fundy and the Isthmus of Chignecto. By the end
of April and into mid-May, they cross the Bay of Fundy at increasingly lower
latitudes. By the end of May, some birds may even be flying over the Gulf of
Maine from mid-coast or southern Maine. There may be diurnal migration in
the early spring when birds use a southwesterly flow to arrive on breeding
grounds in a timely fashion while avoiding otherwise wintery flying
conditions. Again, in the very late spring, birds may be flying during the
day and night in a rush to arrive on breeding grounds.

Rare southern birds and the unusual number of shorebirds this spring seem to
be the result of strong cyclonic systems that sweep birds out to sea in the
southeastern United States and bring them to the shores of southern Nova
Scotia, from Yarmouth to Halifax.

As I analyze more of my acoustic recordings in other areas and from previous
years, I may be able to refine these ideas.

Thanks for your interest in reading these reports this spring.

John
