Cornus alternifolia can get to 20 or even 30feet.
They are understory and edge shrubs of hardwood forest. Called pagoda
dogwood. They have successive layers of branches.

It could be Cornus sericea (red osier) but this is a more compact shrub and
as someone mentioned, it would have opposite leaves.

These are the most common native dogwoods
