Thank you Stephen. Somewhere I read it was mixed with a fat or simply =
finely ground and mixed with water (and if I remember correctly, ground =
insect bodies) and applied to rocks, wood, fabric or leather. It was =
many years ago. Paul=E2=80=99s reference to the deposit just stirred an =
interest in an old idea. I wasn=E2=80=99t looking for any quantity, =
maybe a cup at most and a chance to play.

.............................................................
'Yellow ochre' =3D natural deposits of hydrated iron oxide, used since =
antiquity along with red ochre, for instance in Lascaux cave paintings =
and earlier (Wikipedia; unclear if refined at all, or suspended in some =
vehicle before application). Artist=E2=80=99s paints now said often =
made from synthetic iron oxide, not the natural stuff (presumably now in =
a suspension in oil)? =20
