Shouldn't an inadequate inventory be a set back to development and reason
to order reassessment?
A bio blitz at this time of year won't give levels of diversity or rarity
that occur in spring and summer. It is usual that Department natural
resources mandates such a spring and summer dual assessments. A bio blitz
now would undervalue the site. Has DNR Wildlife been approached to order
that complete surveys be conducted?

Hi there! I'm helping out with a BioBlitz to be conducted at the Alton
Gas site in Stewiacke on December 10th. I was wondering if you would
be able to forward the following message to local naturalists who
might be interested in helping out with this event. We need all the
help we can get - expert or not!

Thanks in advance.

With warmth,
Danielle Moore

Hands on, BioBlitz flora and fauna fun! Come one, come all

The EAC and community volunteers are hosting a BioBlitz December 10th
in Stewiacke near the proposed Alton Gas pipeline route.

A BioBlitz is a fun, hands-on full-day event, involving finding and
identifying as many species as possible in a short period of time. The
area that we will be covering includes streams, wooded areas, fields,
and near the river shore. In a BioBlitz, participating experts along
with a handy field ID guide smart phone app are there to make sure
that non-expert but enthusiastic and diligent people can help collect
data. The more warm bodies, the more area we can cover!

We need volunteers from both the expert and non-expert category!

If you are a freshwater/ tree/flora fauna biologist, species expert,
naturalist and want to help, please get in touch!

If you are a non-expert interested to participate, learn
identification skills, and help a community build science data in the
face of big development, please get in touch!

We=E2=80=99ve chosen this site because the environmental assessment for the
Alton Gas project didn=E2=80=99t include adequate information about the
ecology and species of the area that could be impacted, so we=E2=80=99re
supporting the community to collect independent data and build a more
complete understanding of this ecosystem that would be disrupted.

If interested, please contact daniellemoore@dal.ca stating your
relevant identification knowledge (if any) and if you have access to a
vehicle. Use BioBlitz as the subject line.

This event will carry on rain or shine, so please dress for the
weather and bring your lunch!
Approx 9am - 4pm and we will help arrange car pooling out to the site
from Halifax.
