I spent much of today birding some coastal areas of Queens County around Li=
verpool. By far the biggest surprise was a drake Northern Shoveler that fle=
w up the Mersey River past Fort Point and the sewage ponds area on the oppo=
site shore with two Black Ducks. I looked inland but did not re-find it. El=
sewhere, there was a small but active group of Razorbills on the water off =
Western Head and a single Razorbill with Long-tailed Ducks off Fort Point, =
Liverpool, but no other alcids with the exception of a couple of Black Guil=
lemots off Western Head. Other interesting finds: 2 male Gadwalls still in =
the Liverpool sewage ponds (last week's female seemed to be missing); 60+ B=
uffleheads in the Liverpool sewage ponds (about 70 last week); still 14 Sca=
up in the ponds (half Greater, half Lesser); a pair of White-winged Scoters=
off Fort Point; about 40 Black Scoters off Western Head among the eiders; =
2 Red-necked Grebes off Western Head; and a first-winter Glaucous Gull amon=
g about 6 Icelands in the Liverpool sewage ponds.
On the other hand, passerines seem to be all but extinct in coastal Queens.
