Well Fritz - they may not have told the whole story!

The dam has been there much before that. and the whitefish

were doing nicely til DFO decided to open things up.

Now nobody knows if they went out to sea and had lost the

knowledge how to get back or what. Anyway opening the dam

was a serious set back to the fish. And let the pickerel

above the dam where the white fish lived.

Did they mention the gaspereau fishery? Approved by DFO.

They managed to pretty well wipe the shad out of the Lahave

and we know the white fish traveled with the gaspereau.

I caught one in the Lahave once - realised it - and told DFO about it.

They didn't believe me and said some nasty things about me. Threatened

to put me in jail should I catch another - the minister at the time found out

what they were up to and wrote me a letter of apology on behalf of his department.

Not one of DFOs success stories no matter who the CBC paints as the villain.

   Enjoy the winter

Hi All,

I want to recommend highly the Land and Sea episode shown this past weekend on CBC about the demise of the last Atlantic Whitefish on earth, which is happening here right here in Nova Scotia.

This isn't a result of climate change but rather the direct actions of governments and sports fishermen. Here's a quick list of the actions that caused the Atlantic Whitefish population go from tiny but stable to nearly or probably extinct.

1- The construction of a dam in the 1960's blocked the only exit to the ocean for the fish which, like salmon, live much of their lives at sea.

2 - DFO ending a captive breeding program that was working to bring back the population of Atlantic Whitefish to save the money that program cost.

3 - DFO destroying the breeding tanks and other infrastructure so the program could only be restarted at great expense; then taking all adult and young fish and dumping them in a lake near Burnside where they weren't monitored, can't be fund anymore and may have all died.

4 - Lastly someone introducing Small Mouth Bass and then Chain Pickerel into the three lakes that were the last known habitat of the Atlantic Whitefish shortly after the loss of the captive breeding program resulted in the apparent loss of almost all the wild Atlantic Whitefish in those lakes.

At the moment a small number of juvenile fish have been collected and they are trying to restart the captive breeding program but are unable to find enough adult fish, in the one lake where they are thought to remain, to get the program up and running. Estimates of the number of Atlantic Whitefish remaining range from 500 to 2000 but no one really knows for sure.

       All the best.

                                    Fritz McEvoy
